Shopping for a car

I have decided to buy a car so that I can do some things and enjoy being in Cape Town, the public transportation is horrible and I can't walk around by myself at night.

My coworker took me looking at cars today with some friends of her's that are looking to buy as well.

Of course the big hump I have to get over is actually driving on the left side. So I took a fiat for a drive. A manual and I probably scared the salesman for a couple reasons: I think the brake and gas pedals were very close together, either way I kept hitting the gas instead of the brake and then I am use to leaving space to the right for the passenger side of the car, so I was driving too close to the curb and parked cars, that the passenger had to jerk the wheel. But I must say that I stayed on the left side of the road and I did not kill the vehicle shifting. :) Have to be proud of something when there is so much that is out of my element.

So I was ready to take a nap when I got home after trying to negotiate car buying. I did see a Chevrolet with the steering wheel on the left side.

I am a bit afraid that I might ruin my car before I learn to drive here, but I think I should get the hang of it (2 weeks I was told), that it will be worth it to see outside of the city and get to the store for things that I need.

But after such a day, I am going to McDonald's I think, super close to my house and it may taste a bit different, but it will be something familiar.

I am sure plenty of you are saying that one does not go to another country to eat McDonald's, but sometimes one needs something from home. :)

hey! That's called dealing with travel stress - I did htat in Egypt too - got completely overwhelmed after five intense days and retreated into a 5-star hotel for a night just to regroup. That's okay! Normal part of the process. Your pics are gorgeous, girl! I can't imagine what it looks like in person. I wish I had a pic of your face and the salesman's face during hte test drive. Priceless! :) Good job orienting yourself! SRKL

You'll learn to drive on the left side much quicker than you were told, especially when another car is coming towards you. :)
Great pic's. Jody

Don't feel bad about McDonalds. I did it in Hungary, too! After 36 hours of traveling to Hungary I needed something familiar. (You had to buy the ketchup packets! Funny!). There's no place like home!

Congratulations on making your dream come true of going to South Africa, keep blogging so we can see what your up to!
